Can United Steal Mata Away?

Following Jose Mourinho’s shocking declaration that Mata would be allowed to quit Chelsea in the current transfer window, there has been a flurry of activities behind the scenes at several clubs across Europe, who have been alerted to this situation. They are all preparing a bid for the Spanish international, hoping to land the 25-year old.

The play maker has endured a difficult season thus far and has struggled to find game time under Mourinho, who has preferred to instead stick with the likes of Oscar and Eden Hazard in attack. Mata’s unhappy reaction at being substituted in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory against Southampton revealed his feelings at the moment.

Chelsea’s latest financial figures too have been in the red, and given their priority to buy a striker this month, they could offload Mata for a hefty amount to raise the money. ESPNFC report that United are the latest team to have expressed an interest in his services. David Moyes is struggling in his new job, and a marquee signing could go some distance in easing the pressure of his back.

The acquisition of Mata could work wonders for United, given their urgent need of creativity in midfield and Mata’s proven pedigree and ability of performing in England. Chelsea could however intervene in this possible transfer, as they would rather prefer selling him abroad than to a domestic rival. Thus, a move to Paris Saint-Germain or a Spanish club looks more likely to materialize, who themselves have sounded out their keen interest in him.

Do United still fancy themselves as being in with a long shot of getting Mata?
