Can Chelsea Women Win The WSL?

Chelsea Women are currently sat at the pinnacle of the Women’s Super League. They’ve only failed to win two of their games this season, with nine wins, one draw and one defeat. So the question remains can Chelsea Women win the WSL?

Their closest rivals in the division, Manchester United who just hammered Liverpool 6-0, are three points behind them. However, the Red Devils also have a game in hand and have superior goal difference to the Blues.

Chelsea played United back in November. In that game, Chelsea won 3-1 away from home, thanks to goals from Sam Kerr, Lauren James and Erin Cuthbert.

Sam Kerr is Chelsea Women’s top goal scorer this season, with six goals and two assists in eleven WSL games. Chelsea’s top assist maker, Guro Reiten, has nine assists in eleven games. On top of this, she also has more assists than anyone else in the league.

Chelsea’s next game against Liverpool could prove to be a crucial one. It’s also a game that the Blues will be expected to win – Liverpool haven’t had the best of seasons so far, sitting 9th in the WSL table.

This being said, Liverpool are the only team to have beaten Chelsea so far in the league. In that game, the Reds overturned a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1, thanks to a brace from Katie Stengel. Following the game, Chelsea Women boss Emma Hayes said her players ‘couldn’t hit a barn door’ – as such, the Blues will be out for revenge.

In their last WSL fixture, Chelsea rescued a 1-1 draw away at Arsenal. Despite trailing for most of the second half, a goal from Sam Kerr in the 89th minute spared Chelsea’s blushes and earned them a point on the road.

Like Manchester United, Arsenal are also just three points behind Chelsea. However, unlike United, they do not have a better goal difference than the Blues.

Ultimately, the WSL will most likely be decided between Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United this season. Chelsea may be at the top of the pile now – but can they stay there and could Manchester City still influence things?
