Can Chelsea Win Race For Draxler?

Chelsea are reportedly showing initial interest in Schalke’s midfielder, Julian Draxler, after it has been revealed that the Blues are in the race to sign the young German international who has impressed the elite clubs in the continent.

With Jose Mourinho officially introduced as manager in this past week, the Portuguese has already begun listing his prime targets for the transfer window, as clubs race against each other for multiple players. Mourinho’s master plan includes buying both experienced club stars, and young talents who can provide a good footing in terms of youth. The club has been linked with players like Edinson Cavani, whose transfer fee could exceed £50 million, signaling Chelsea’s intentions in this window.

Draxler began his career in Germany with Schalke, who brought him into their youth academy in 2001. The 19-year old spent nearly a decade in the youth academy, exposed to rigorous training with fellow youngsters, before he was offered his first ever professional contract by the club in 2011. The attacking midfielder played 15 league matches in his first season at the club, scoring one goal. In his second season, he played 30 matches, scoring 2 goals. But he came into the limelight in this past season, where he played 30 matches and scored 10 goals.

Currently, the German has established his place in the Schalke starting eleven, and on 10th May this year, he signed a contract extension, when he was rumored to be targeted by Borussia Dortmund. His new contract would mean that any potential buyer will have to pay an inflated amount to buy out his contract. However, considering the money power vested in clubs like Chelsea, that would not be an issue provided Draxler performs on the pitch.

The club confirmed the signing of Bayer Leverkusen attacker Andre Schurrle, after months of negotiations with the German outfit.

According to Metro, Draxler has confirmed his ambitions, stating his wishes to play at the biggest clubs in Europe.

Draxler said, “Which boy doesn’t dream about playing for Real, Barca, Chelsea or Manchester United? There is nothing to be ashamed of.”

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt refused to rule out a move by Chelsea, choosing not to comment on interest shown by the Blues.

Heldt said, “I’ve heard nothing about it; There has been no official transfer inquiry from Chelsea. Still it’s a fact there are always clubs considering the qualities of players like Julian Draxler.”
