Bruce Buck Worried About Smaller Teams

European football is about to change. According to Bruce Buck, the new rules that are meant to cut financial losses will make the gap between the elite and other teams even bigger than it already is. Chelsea’s chief, insisted that UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules will not improve the quality of European football and that the smaller teams will stand no chance against the most established clubs on the Continent.

According to Metro, Buck said that Chelsea will have no problem complying with the new set of rules. He also hinted that it will be really hard for other teams that are not currently financially stable to rise and cause problems to the well-known clubs that have dominated European football over the past years.

Chelsea’s chief made a reference to the fact that the Blues have won three Premier League trophies and a Champions League trophy since Abramovich started investing in the club. If not for the Russian owner, the team would have probably stayed somewhere in the middle of the Premier League standings.

The FFP regulations basically say that you cannot spend more than you earn. This will become a big problem for those teams that have a poor fan base or that have now important marketing platforms. Teams such as Chelsea will be allowed to spend a lot more than Stoke or Cardiff.

Even if the FFP has been created since 2009 it has not been implemented on a European level. The first season in which teams that fail to reach FFP standards will not be allowed to take part in European competitions is the 2013-2014 season which is well underway. The assessment that will give teams the permission to perform will be made by taking into consideration the past two seasons.

The entire process is quite complicated according to Bruce Buck who is against the FFP because he considers the football world will be split into two parts: the established clubs which will still be able to afford big transfers and consistent salaries and the clubs that will have little or no access to domestic or European trophies.
