Benteke Agent Pours Water On Chelsea’s Pursuit of Benteke For Now

It was only reported earlier that the chase for Aston Villa’s Benteke is a two-horse race between London clubs Chelsea and Tottenham after the 22-year old submitted a written transfer request at the end of last week. It was also reported that the story was set to test the resolve of both Villa and Benteke, as Villa were thinking to sell him to Chelsea whereas the striker was personally eyeing a move to White Hart Lane.

It now looks like Benteke is going to have the final say in this matter and get his way by moving to Tottenham, after his agent Eris Kismet spoke to the press and almost made a dig at Chelsea’s chances of signing Benteke. He said that Chelsea had the same odds of luring him as a Belgian amateur seventh division league team called Turkse Rangers.

Villa, though, were keen to sell him to Chelsea as they felt that they could get a better fee from the rich Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, whereas Benteke wanted to move to Tottenham and become their main striker rather than possibly playing second fiddle at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho.

But London Evening Standard believe that Kismet’s comments have more or less blown Chelsea out of the reckoning and has paved the way for Spurs to make their move. They were being previously linked to Barcelona’s David Villa, however they have lost out on that chase as he is set to join Atletico Madrid. They can therefore focus their efforts in signing Benteke now having already added Brazilian playmaker Paulinho, and Chairman Daniel Levy would also be more willing to sign a young striker for the long-term future rather than sign the 32-year old David Villa for possibly 2-3 seasons at the most.

With Tottenham looking like the now clear favourites for Benteke do you see them closing the deal and announcing their biggest transfer ever in the coming few days? Or will there be yet another twist which will deny Tottenham at the very end and see Chelsea or Arsenal secure the signing of the desirable Benteke?
