Barcelona Have Wishful Thinking Regarding Luiz

According to Metro, Barcelona expect David Luiz to submit a transfer request to Chelsea, after earlier reports confirmed concrete interest from the Catalan giants, who had a reported £35 million bid rejected by the London based club.

Chelsea have welcomed Jose Mourinho back into mix, and have a strong squad ahead of the new Barclays Premier League season. The Portuguese boss has strengthened the squad with several new signings to add a bit of youth and experience. With players like Frank Lampard, who have been the club’s most consistent performers over the last few years, nearing the end of their career, the club is looking forward to newer players to keep the progress going. The club’s participation in the International Champions Cup in the United states saw them progress to the final where they were soundly beaten by Mourinho’s former side Real Madrid thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo. As the season draws to its opening round of fixtures, the players will be heading for another round of international friendlies, posing another threat to the managers who will dread the possibility of an injury before the start of the campaign.

On the transfer front, Chelsea have so far let players like Yossi Benayoun, Ross Turnbull and Florent Malouda leave after they were not offered new contracts. Youngster Jeffrey Bruma, who could not establish his position in the senior squad ever since joining the club as a youth player in 2007, was sold to Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven for a reported fee of £2.5 million.

In terms of arrivals, the club’s first signing of the summer was German attacker Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen. Schurrle was shortly joined by central midfielder Marco van Ginkel from Vitesse. Mark Schwarzer’s arrival completed the three senior signings, while the club also welcomed youth sensations Isaiah Brown, Cristian Cuevas and Stipe Perica as potential future stars.

Luiz is aware of the potential partnership of John Terry and Gary Cahill, which could mean less game time for the Brazilian if Mourinho chooses them as his first choice pairing, and this could prompt the 26-year old to push for a move.
