Baggies win a huge confidence builder says January signing

Chelsea star Olivier Giroud says he is delighted have made his first start for his new club on Monday night, and believes the victory over West Brom is just the confidence boost they needed to push on into the final third of the season.

The Frenchman left to the field to rapturous applause after 60 minutes on Monday, after producing a fine display on his Blues debut to help Antonio Conte’s side to a much needed 3-0 win.

Giroud played a key role in Chelsea’s opener – laying the ball off wonderfully to Eden Hazard in the box, who slammed home for his first of the night.

Victor Moses added the Blues’ second moments after Giroud was substituted for Alvaro Morata, before Hazard notched his second less than 10 minutes later to complete the scoring.

And Giroud believes it was just what his side needed after a difficult fortnight.

“I’m very happy for the team, obviously we needed those three points and we needed confidence for the following games.” he said.

“We done the job, it was a clean sheet, three goals and we could have scored more. It’s true that the team wasn’t playing with full freedom at times but that’s normal after two disappointing results.

“I feel very good. It’s been maybe two months since I started a game. I’m training hard and working to be ready physically and I tried to do what the coach asked me to do tactically.”

Giroud signed for Chelsea in an £18 million deadline day deal from Arsenal, and while the move was seen as controversial by many, the former Gunner says there was never any doubt that Stamford Bridge was the perfect destination for him.

“Chelsea was the perfect team for me, the perfect club,” he said, “It’s the Premier League, it’s the club which has won the most titles in the last 10 years, it’s a massive club. I’m very proud and happy to be here.

“People want you to wear the shirt and give the maximum. I know I will have to be efficient, assist sometimes, score sometimes. We don’t have too much time for integration but I feel very good and the boys have been very good to me.”
