Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher has made a major prediction ahead of the Euro 2024 final between England and Spain. While he did not divulge his predicted scoreline, he thinks that Spain have a weak point in their squad – Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.

Furthermore, Carragher also thinks that England have an ideal player to exploit Cucurella’s defensive frailties. Bukayo Saka of Arsenal gave Cucurella plenty of problems in the Premier League last season when the two teams came to blows – something that Carragher was quick to point out.

Carragher had plenty of nice things to say about Saka, praising him for his attacking output and his defensive contributions at the Euros. Generally, Saka is deployed as a right winger, but he has found himself being used as a wing-back in England’s squad due to their surplus of attacking talent.

Nevertheless, we feel that Carragher is being somewhat unfair to Cucurella. He has been outstanding at Euro 2024 – his defensive bravery and indefatigable work rate has been vital towards Spain’s successes at the tournament. On WhoScored, Cucurella has picked up an average rating of 7.18 at the Euros.

Additionally, he has also managed to keep Alex Grimaldo out of the squad due to the quality of his performances – this is some feat when you consider that Grimaldo in on the heels of an invincible season with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Speaking to Sky Sports on X (formerly Twitter), Carragher mused: “I think Saka can have [Cucurella] on toast, don’t worry about that. I’ve seen that so often in the Premier League.

“We’ve seen it before, he gives him huge problems. And not just Cucurella – he’s given almost every left-back huge problems in this tournament and he’s probably been England’s best performer [at Euro 2024].”
