Are Chelsea Risking Losing Cavani?

Chelsea are playing a waiting game in the bidding war for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, as the Italian outfit president has revealed that Manchester City have been the only club to have submitted a concrete bid for the front man.

The Blues have been patient in their approach, as the aggressive way to force a deal was responsible for the club losing out on former Atletico Madrid striker, Radamel Falcao, who had been a long term target for the London based side. Jose Mourinho has been actively involved in the transfer market this summer, ever since his arrival at the club from Real Madrid. And one of the prime priorities for the Portuguese was the purchase of a top class striker to solve the striking problems for the Blues.

Chelsea have been continually linked with a move for Cavani, and the striker is reportedly on top of Mourinho’s transfer wish list. Roman Abramovich has been supportive of any move that improves the quality of the squad, and the form of the current crop of strikers in the team, the Russian owner would want to see a striker replicate the kind of form Didier Drogba showed during his long and successful stint with the club.

26-year old Cavani started his career in his home town in Uruguay, where he played for the Danubio FC youth setup, before joining the club on a professional contract in 2005. The Uruguayan then joined Italian side Palermo for nearly £3.5 million. The striker played 109 times for the club, scoring a meagre 34 goals. Once he started making a name for himself, he was approached by Napoli, who snatched him up in the summer transfer window of 2010.

Napoli was where Cavani discovered exquisite form, scoring 78 goals from just 104 appearances, proving an excellent scoring ratio for a European league. After this feat, Cavani was linked with various clubs including Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Recent media reports have suggested Cavani’s family members have been talking about the player’s wishes to move to Madrid, creating more speculation.

According to DailyMail, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed: “The only meeting I’ve had has been with Manchester City, but the offer was inadequate,”

“There is no need to have a face to face with Cavani.”
