Alan Shearer: Chelsea star should NEVER play for England again

Alan Shearer has raged over the situation between Danny Drinkwater and England, saying that the midfielder should not play for his country again.

Drinkwater turned down an international call-up with England last week, supposedly to help him recover from a long-term injury he sustained earlier in the season.

Many have been outraged by the news however, and Shearer is the latest of pundits and former players to slam the former Leicester and Manchester United midfielder.

Shearer, a Premier League and England legend, did not hold back when discussing the matter in his column in The Sun, saying:

“I cannot question players withdrawing from international duty claiming they are injured,” writes Shearer in his column in The Sun.

“I wonder sometimes if it were the World Cup final whether those pulls and twinges would heal quicker? But there you go.

“The one thing I do question is a player apparently refusing a call-up because he claims he has not played enough football.

“Danny Drinkwater, what were you thinking? If you have not played enough football, take the opportunity to play some!

“Going forward he is not the sort of person I would want in my squad. Given that attitude he shouldn’t be picked again.

“It is England v Germany at Wembley for crying out loud.”

Drinkwater is certainly enduring his fair share of criticism for this call-up rejection, but it has to be noted that perhaps he was pressured to do so by Chelsea in a bid to keep him 100% fit for their upcoming fixtures.
