‘A Key Target…’ Report Confirms Chelsea Are Set To Step Up Pursuit Of 37 Cap International Defender

Chelsea have made Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries a “key target” ahead of the January transfer window, according to 90min.com.

The Dutchman, who has been capped 37 times by his country, was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer but it looks as if the Blues are ready to step up their interest in the player.

Reece James’ recent knee injury has highlighted the need for more depth on the right flank. Both Thomas Tuchel and current manager Graham Potter have been forced to use the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic out of position in order to provide cover.

Captain Cesar Azpilicueta would be the more natural fit but he is now 32 years of age, and he no longer possesses the stamina required to bomb up and down the entire right-hand side of the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

In contrast, Dumfries is a natural wingback. He has thrived in the position for both club and country, and he would provide decent competition for James.
