A Dramatic U-Turn In The Benitez-Chelsea Relationship?

This may still be way too far from actually materializing, but given the fact that Benitez won the Barclays Manager of the Month award, one might be forced to ponder whether it will be a smart move for Chelsea to terminate their arrangement with the Spaniard once the season gets over as it was originally decided, or it will turn out to be a bad idea.

Benitez joined Chelsea very acrimoniously as a replacement for the sacked Roberto di Matteo, who was much loved by the Chelsea faithful. The pain to see their beloved di Matteo was swiftly replaced by the anger and discontent to see him being replaced by one-time Liverpool manager, Benitez. So much so, that he was severely booed by the fans in his first match.

According to London Evening Standard, Benitez has to be credited for the way he has conducted himself in such hostile conditions, as he has simply gone about doing his job like a thorough professional. There have certainly been some instances in press conferences where Benitez has broken loose about his feelings towards the fans but in general he has maintained his composure and professionalism.

However, this relationship has softened a bit over time, and with Benitez nearing the end of his reign at the helm of Chelsea, there has been a certain development which has again put the limelight on the volatile relationship between him and the fans. Benitez has been awarded with the Barclays Manager of the Month award.

Statistically speaking, he has done a respectable job for the Blues, especially in the month of April. His Chelsea side have picked up a massive 10 points out of a possible 12, and are still very much in the hunt of a top 4 spot. They have also sealed their passage to the Europa League final against Benfica and they drew against Spurs in the week but were clearly the better side.

With a return of Jose Mourinho to Chelsea still yet to be confirmed, could it really be worth a thought as to why Benitez’s current agreement with Chelsea can’t be turned into a permanent one. Do you see a dramatic U-turn in the relationship between Chelsea and Benitez in the offing?
