Terry Postpones Decision Regarding His Chelsea Future

Chelsea may be looking to extend their captain’s contract for another couple of years in the summer and John Terry is content to put discussions on hold as the Blues have faced a complicated couple of months with matches every two, three days or so. His deal with the Stamford Bridge team will expire at the end of 2014 and it is more than likely that unlike with Lampard, Terry will be given the opportunity to extend his current deal. The only issue with him signing a new contract is Chelsea’s new policy that is mostly focused on youngsters. The Blues also stated that no players over the age of 30 will receive a contract extension that will last more than 12 months.

Even though Terry has been with Chelsea since 1998 and has won almost a dozen major trophies, he could also be sold at the end of the season. According to the London Evening Standard, there are many variables to take into consideration. The Blues’ transfer policy is not the only issue that may come between him and the club. Benitez will leave the club and there is no way of knowing who is next in line to manage the Stamford Bridge team. Even though the policy regarding older players is already being applied, there is no way of predicting what Chelsea’s next coach will demand. If the rumors are true and Mourinho will return to London, Terry will definitely stay. The Portuguese manager is not a big fan of promoting youngsters and has a different take on football than what the club is currently promoting. Mourinho stated that keeping Lampard at Stamford Bridge would become a priority if he will be Chelsea’s coach so it is more than likely that the situation with Terry is pretty much the same. JT though has said he is in no rush as he is happy to do whatever is best for the team and discussing his contract in the summer is no issue for him

Terry has had a rough season and even if he has managed to score a few times lately he has not been a team regular. He was out on a knee injury that did not heal that well. The 32 year old has had some inconsistent performances and has not been as important for the team as Lampard, who is one of Chelsea’s top scorers. Clearly, Terry has not benefitted from Benitez being the manager as he is seemingly not a favorite of the Spaniard’s so maybe he would be the same JT if he had been managed by Roberto Di Matteo or Mourinho this season. Let’s hope he receives an extension to his current deal as he deserves it and then he can get back to his usual level of performance next season.
