5 Things You Need To Know About Saul Niguez As Fabrizio Romano Confirms Official Bid For Spaniard Has Been Made

Chelsea have made an official bid for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The reliable reporter claims that the Blues have tabled a loan offer, with an option to buy the 26-year-old. Manchester United are also in the race for the player having enquired about his availability in the last day or so.

However, if Chelsea do win the race for Niguez’s signature, what sort of player will the Champions League winners be getting?

Press the next page as we list five things you need to know about the Spanish international.

1) Niguez is very much a Tuchel player

The Spaniard has bags of ability on the ball, but it is his athleticism and energy that has won him many admirers over the years. He has been a perfect fit for Diego Simeone’s style of play at Atletico.

Thomas Tuchel similarly demands a lot from his central midfielders, and Niguez will undoubtedly slot in well alongside the likes of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.

2) He can play in multiple positions

During his career, Niguez has been deployed as a centre-back, left-back, holding midfielder, a number eight, a right-winger and on the left flank.

In Simeone’s 3-5-2 system, the 26-year-old is currently being used as a left wingback, which is believed to be one of the reasons that the Spaniard wants to leave the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

3) Niguez is unhappy at Atletico because he wants to play a central role

Earlier this summer, Simeone explained why Niguez is looking to leave Atletico, despite the fact that the La Liga club won the league title last season.

The Argentine said that the Spanish international has grown tired of being played as a utility player, and he wants to play regularly in a central midfield role.

4) He comes from a family of footballers

Niguez’s father played for his hometown club Elche, while his elder brothers, Jony and Aaron, have both played professionally.

Jony has had spells at Rio Ave, Feirense and Mallorca, while Aaron played for Valencia, Almeria and Braga.

5) Niguez has won every major honour (apart from the Champions League)

As well as winning the La Liga title with Atletico last campaign, the Spaniard has also lifted the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and two Europa Leagues.

Niguez was part of the side that lost the Champion League final to Real Madrid in 2016 but he has never won Europe’s premier competition.
