5 Things To Know About Denzel Dumfries As Chelsea Turn Their Attention Towards Signing The Inter Star

Chelsea are expected to make Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries their next transfer target, according to reports in the UK.

Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in the Dutchman but Thomas Tuchel’s side are likely to be favourites for the player’s signature if they move fast.

Inter need to raise funds to balance the club’s books and they would be willing to sell Dumfries for around €40m (£34m) after already signing Raoul Bellanova as his replacement.

So what do we know about the defender? Press the next page as we list five facts about him.

1) He was always self confident despite doubts about his ability as a youth player

Dumfries has always maintained he would make it as a professional footballer, despite many having doubts about his technical ability from an early age.

He went through the youth academies at three different teams before he was eventually given his chance at his hometown club Sparta.

2) Dumfries made his debut at Sparta Rotterdam before setting his sights higher

After making his first senior appearance in February 2015, the right-back began to receive rave reviews during his first full season, helping his side to promotion from the Dutch second tier.

Dumfries also played his part in Sparta avoiding relegation from the Eredivisie in 2016/17 and he then made the switch to Heerenveen where his performances attracted the interest of PSV Eindhoven.

3) He made a name for himself at PSV and received his first cap for the Netherlands

In the summer of 2018, he made the switch to PSV for €5.5m and he quickly established himself as a regular starter at right-back for Mark van Bommel’s side.

Within months, he was handed his first call up by Ronald Koeman for the Netherlands’ senior squad and he has featured regularly for his country ever since.

4) Dumfries joined Inter last year where he had a decent first season

Following three relatively successful seasons at PSV, Serie A Champions Inter Milan came calling last summer as the Nerazzurri looked to replace Achraf Hakimi.

The Italian club paid €15m (including add-ons) for Dumfries and, while he did receive some criticism during his first campaign in Italy, he still made 45 appearances in all competitions.

5) He is known for his attacking instincts and possesses similar traits to Reece James

Dumfries isn’t the best defensively so he is much better suited to playing as a wingback. He likes to get on the ball and run at opponents, with his physicality making him perfectly suited to the Premier League.

In some ways, the 26-year-old can be compared to Reece James, in terms of his goals and assists in the final third, although he is less creative and not as inclined to cross the ball as his English counterpart.
