5 Chelsea Youngsters Who Could Be The Next To Breakthrough Into The First Team

Chelsea are not expected to field any young players in their Carabao Cup tie against Aston Villa tomorrow but some may still be included in the matchday squad.

It must be said that the Blues have overseen an exodus of promising youngsters over the summer, although there still remains a core of promising talent who could yet make a breakthrough into the first team.

The players we have named on this list have all been impressing for either the Under 18s or Under 23s, with some having had recent experience of facing senior teams in the EFL Trophy.

Press the next page as we go through five young talents we believe could make their first-team debuts for the Blues in the not too distant future.

Jude Soonsup-Bell

The forward started out in Chelsea’s Under 13s after joining from Swindon Town. He has since gone on to play at every youth team level until he was promoted to the Under 23s this season.

Soonsup-Bell was prolific for the Under 18s last campaign, bagging 18 in 18 appearances. He also scored once and provided two assists in the UEFA Youth League game versus Zenit last week.

Xavier Mbuyamba

The Dutchman arrived from Barcelona last summer, with him being already compared to a young Virgil van Dijk so a lot was expected of the defender.

However, a torn meniscus meant Mbuyamba missed most of his first campaign at the academy. He has begun to show what he is all about in recent weeks, though, with runouts in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, where he helped to secure a penalty shootout win against Exeter’s senior team last month.

Harvey Vale

Like Soonsup-Bell, the attacking midfielder started out in Under 13s after moving from Fulham. Unlike, his teammate, though, the 18-year-old is already thriving in the Under 23s, having scored four goals in four Premier League 2 appearances this season.

Vale has also impressed in the EFL Trophy and the UEFA Youth League, while both he and Soonsup-Bell are now important members of England’s Under 19 setup.

Bryan Fiabema

The Norwegian arrived at Cobham after a successful trial at the beginning of 2020. His first full season at the club was spent playing for both the Under 18s and Under 23s, picking up seven goals in 25 games for the two youth teams.

This season, Fiabema’s most notable performance so far was scoring the opening goal against Exeter’s senior side in the EFL Trophy last month. The 18-year-old will now want to kick on from there.

Sam McClelland

The centre-back has been at the club just over three years after moving from Coleraine. He became captain of the Under 18s in his second season with the Blues and the defender has now moved up to the Under 23s.

Despite having not played a senior game for Chelsea, McClelland got his first cap for his country when Northern Ireland played Ukraine in a friendly back in June.
