4 Stats That Show Why Referee Anthony Taylor ISN’T Biased Against Chelsea Ahead Of The Brentford Game

There was a lot of controversy surrounding Anthony Taylor after his decision making in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool back in August.

Many supporters wanted the referee taken off matches involving the Blues entirely, but he will be in charge when Thomas Tuchel’s side face Brentford this weekend.

We have decided to look at the numbers (taken from WhoScored.com) to determine whether there is in fact any bias against Chelsea when Taylor officiates.

While fans probably won’t be happy with our findings, we believe it’s right to share them. Press the next page as we look at four stats that show why Taylor IS NOT biased against Chelsea.

Points Per Game

Only Manchester United (2.09), Liverpool (1.98), Manchester City (1.92) and Arsenal (1.82) have a higher points per game average when Taylor is in charge. The Blues’ average is 1.79.

You could argue that Chelsea’s points per game should be higher than Arsenal, considering their relative success in the Premier League in recent years, but you would have to go down into the individual matches to determine the level of opponents faced when officiated by Taylor.

Fouls Per Game

Chelsea commit 11.07 fouls per match when Taylor is in charge of one of their league games. In terms of other English clubs in the top flight, there are six other teams who have higher numbers, with Manchester United (12.25) leading the way.

The Blues get 11.28 fouls committed against them on average per game with Taylor in charge. Only Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Everton in the Premier League are fouled against more.

Yellow Cards

Taylor has handed out (on average) 2.17 bookings to opponents of Chelsea during the 29 league games he has refereed the London club during his career.

The official has given 2.28 yellow cards to Blues players in the same matches. It is a very slight difference and hardly evidence of a referee trying to punish one team more than the other.

Red Cards

Taylor has only EVER handed out one red card to a Chelsea player in the Premier League; that was Reece James in the fixture against Liverpool earlier this season. He had not sent off any Blues player in his previous 28 league matches. That’s an average of 0.03 reds per game. He did, however, send off Mateo Kovacic in the FA Cup final last year.

In contrast, Taylor has sent off FOUR players for opposing teams when facing Chelsea in the Premier League, giving him an average of 0.14 per game. The Blues are actually leading the way (along with Aston Villa and Tottenham) in terms of the most red cards that Taylor has sent off opponents in league games he has officiated in.
