4 Chelsea Stars Who Are Contenders For The Club’s Player Of The Season

TV pundit Ian Wright tipped Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic as the club’s player of the season so far, and while the Croatian may well be in with a shout, there are a few other names in contention too.

The inconsistent performances of the team do mean there is no standout candidate for the accolade but there have been a number of players who have stood out at different times.

Manager Frank Lampard have fielded a number of youngsters who have more than been up to the task, while there have been more experienced heads who have also performed very well.

Press the “next page” as we look at four Chelsea players who should be in contention for the player of the year award.

Tammy Abraham

There were major doubts about the 22-year-old before the start of the campaign, with many seeing him as the third choice striker behind Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi.

However, Lampard placed his faith in Abraham and he was duly rewarded with 15 goals. Whether he can keep that form up for the rest of the campaign, we shall have to wait and see.

Mason Mount

Another player who had question marks over him at the beginning of August, the attacking midfielder has shown that he has the quality to play for the Blues.

Mount has had his dips in form as you would expect of a 21-year-old, but his two assists in the draw against Leicester, and an excellent display versus Spurs in the last league game demonstrate a player who has firmly established as a first-team regular.

Mateo Kovacic

Many raised an eyebrow when Lampard opted to go through with the £40m summer purchase of the Croatian from Real Madrid, but the 25-year-old has probably been the club’s most consistent performer this season.

Kovacic is excellent in possession, and while he still needs to add more goals and assists to his game, he performs an invaluable role in the centre of the pitch.

Reece James

Despite only making his first-team debut for Chelsea back in September, it seems as though the 20-year-old has been an established starter for many years such has been his impact.

He wowed fans with his goal and assist on his debut against Grimsby, and he has never looked back with his superb crossing ability and physical strength which makes him a reliable defender.
