10 Things You Should Know About Chelsea New Boy Marco Van Ginkel

So young midfielder Marco Van Ginkel is Jose Mourinho’s second signing of the transfer window, joining from Vitesee Arnheim. Van Ginkel significantly is the second signing after Andre Schurrle joined from Bayern Leverkusen but the Schurrle deal had been on the table for a while and may have been clinched by Mourinho, but the Van Ginkel deal seems like it is the Portuguese manager’s exclusive work.

Well let’s get to know Chelsea’s new signing a little bit…

  1. Van Ginkel is 20 years old.
  2. Van Ginkel signed a 5 year contract with Chelsea.
  3. Jose Mourinho has already been quoted as saying he expects Van Ginkel to be competing for a 1st team place and has no plans to send him out on loan.
  4. Van Ginkel made his debut for Vitesse Arnheim in 2010 at the tender age of 17 years old.
  5. Chelsea paid Vitesse in the region of £8 for the services of Van Ginkel.
  6. In reference to Van Ginkel’s move to Chelsea his current boss at Vitesse Arnheim, Peter Bosz thinks of the young Dutchman as the next Frank Lampard – high praise indeed.
  7. Speaking to the Chelsea FC Official Website after signing his deal, Van Ginkel was asked how he would describe himself and he said, “I am a box-to-box player. I cover a lot of metres and can score a goal, but I also like to defend and think of myself as a real team player.”
  8. Van Ginkel was called up to the Netherlands national senior team for a friendly against Germany coming on as a substitute in a November 2012 game.
  9. Van Ginkel recently played in the U21 European Championships for the excellent Netherlands side which underachieved going out in the quarter finals.
  10. Van Ginkel scored 11 goals in 41 games last season for Vitesse and has 7 goals in 17 appearances for the Netherlands U21 side, so encouragingly he has an eye for goal.

Marco Van Ginkel certainly seems like he has bucket-loads of talent and he clearly is believed in by Jose Mourinho so there is definitely a good chance of this lad going on to great things and being a part of the blues for many years to come. This deal certainly gets our approval on potential alone plus it has not broken the bank. What do you guys think – can Van Ginkel make an immediate impact at Chelsea? Either way I think Manchester United will be kicking themselves that they missed out on Van Ginkel as he is their kind of player and you gotta believe that if Ferguson had still been there he might have had a say in things and Van Ginkel could be playing in red rather than blue.

The truth is we have scored big time now that Marco Van Ginkel is a blue and he looks like a really awesome signing so let’s be patient and let the lad settle in and Mourinho and his talent will do the rest.
