Willian’s New Deal Not A Good Sign For Cuadrado

Willian’s New Deal Not A Good Sign For Cuadrado

Willian was probably the best player Chelsea had last season. He actually improved from what he had shown the previous year and kept the team afloat during some very tough moments. If anyone deserved a contract extension it was him. According to SkySports the 27-year-old has committed to staying at Stamford Bridge until 2020, a commitment that comes with an increase in salary. The Brazilian winger said: “I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. It’s a dream to continue with this club and over the next four years I will try to help the team win more trophies. It’s been an amazing time for me since I joined the club three years ago, I’ve won titles and last season I was named Chelsea Player of the Year. I hope to be able to stay at that level during the coming seasons and achieve more success.”

The only downside to Willian’s contract extension might come in the form of a departure. Cuadrado who has returned from loan with Serie A giants Juventus, is very unlikely to imagine seeing his contract through to the end. He still has a deal with Chelsea until 2019 and it is very hard to believe he will push Willian aside in the season to come. Even with Conte’s arrival and with a very likely change in playing formation, the Colombian has a profile to similar to that of Willian to be used elsewhere. This situation could be used in the club’s advantage to some extent as Cuadrado is still a very hot asset on the transfer market. He is currently valued at about £21.25m which could help Chelsea balance out their spending budget or even lean the balance in their favor during tough negotiation. All that is left now is to see where could Cuadrado fit in best so as to become a precious bargaining coin. Despite the fact that Juventus haven’t said anything yet, that is his most probable destination. Conte’s former club has been linked to Chelsea on several occasions as the Italian manager still has a good relationship with most of the players there. Not sure who would be best suited for the Blues’ current lot and if the players in which Chelsea are interested will be willing to change sides especially this season when the Londoners have no contact whatsoever with the Champions League.
