Will Chelsea Go For Christian Benteke?

Chelsea will surely be on the market for a new striker after Drogba leaves. Even though Mourinho would like for the Ivorian to stay, it is apparently up to Abramovich to choose what the future holds for the 36 year old striker. With that in mind, the Blues need to start looking for a new striker who most likely will have the same profile as Drogba. According to Metro, Christian Benteke could be one of the names that are high up on the transfer list. Fans and experts might be asking the obvious question though: why bring in Benteke when you had Lukaku and decided to sell while he was on top of his form?

It would be a strange decision to see Benteke at Stamford Bridge. There are few differences between the two Belgian strikers who even have similar stats in both the Premier League and in the Belgian League.

Benteke got himself noticed while playing for Standard Liege and Genk. He managed a goal average of 1 goal every three matches while he was 20 year old and increased his rate since moving to Villa to 1 goal every two matches. Lukaku who is just 21 has played for Anderlecht and had a scoring rate of almost 1 goal ever two matches which was maintained while playing for Everton and WBA. The two strikers even had similar injuries as Lukaku suffered a torn ankle ligament in 2014 which is very similar to Benteke’s tendon rupture. Unfortunately Benteke’s recovery took three times as much as it did for Lukaku. The players have the exact same height, have similar Premier League experience and similar playing styles. There are no obvious reasons why Chelsea should spend almost £30million on a player who is basically a slightly older version of their former striker.
