Which Of These 3 Players Might Chelsea Look To Bring In?

There have been many rumours and all sorts of speculation regarding what interests Antonio Conte most when it comes to future transfers. While Chelsea’s squad is in the Premier League’s top 3 in terms of quality, there may still be room for improvement. The big question is where will the next big transfer fit in? With the Blues on top of the PL and with their Champions League participation looking good for next season, it will take a player of genuine quality to enhance an already impressive squad at Stamford Bridge. The challenge for a new player is that he needs to either be truly world class and be able to instantly adapt to the club’s requirements or he needs to be willing to sit on the bench and work his way up until deemed worthy. The second scenario makes it harder to sign big names given their constant desire to play and mostly their very probable current situation where they are team regulars. From a defensive point of view we look at three options who could add some valuable depth right now and who seem plausible and also doable especially during mid-season.

First there’s Virgil van Dijk who Metro report would fit in perfectly at Chelsea especially with Conte’s new system. Since moving to Southampton, the 25-year-old Dutch international has impressed and has stood out as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. His Celtic past and the 100+ games he played for the Scottish side show he has a lot of experience although young. He has been able to adapt to different playing styles during his time spent in the UK and he has developed into one of the strongest defenders out there. He has already been given the responsibility of being team captain and has made 20 appearances this season. Aside from an appendectomy which kept him off the pitch for 3 months he has suffered no significant injury and has been rather consistent. Even though he just extended his contract in 2016, he could be tempted by a move to Chelsea and a campaign in the Champions League.

The second player is Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson who is kind of the surprise option for Conte’s defense. He can play both down the middle of the defense and as a left-back, he has an imposing stature and a great physique. He is used to the roughness of English football and he is just the right age to start working on the level Conte is asking from his players right now.

Last but not least there’s Napoli’s Algerian international left back Faouzi Ghoulam. He would represent a solid back-up for Marcos Alonso who has been doing a great job up until now. Ghoulam is 25 years old and played for the French U21 team before deciding to pledge his senior international career to Algeria. He is in his third season in Serie A and would be a good addition to the lot.
