UnderDog Costa Comes Off 2nd Best At White Hart Lane

After two successive wins – last weekend’s 1-0 win over Norwich and Tuesday 4-0 hammering of Maccabi Tel Aviv- many expected Chelsea to go on a run and certainly add to their winning streak by beating the in-form Tottenham Hotspur side.

It was not to be however as the main talking point from the Sunday lunchtime game was the apparent altercation between Chelsea striker Diego Costa and manager Jose Mourinho as Costa started the game on the bench perhaps as a result of his argument with the manager during the mid-week match against Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel.

The game was a pretty tepid affair even with Eden Hazard deployed upfront as the Chelsea front man where he was the busiest man on the field and he did provide the most threat from a Chelsea point of view as Mourinho has clearly tired of Costa’s attitude and string of poor returns up front. Just prior to the last few moments of the game the always controversial Spanish/Brazilian striker left the White Hart Lane visitors’ bench throwing his substitutes’ bib seemingly at his manager demonstrating his frustration at spending the entire game on the bench when he was Chelsea’s only striker available in the 0-0 stalemate.

As Football365.com reported, another draw did little to improve Chelsea’s League aspirations (although it did lift them a place above Swansea) and it left Mourinho with this to say in response to his always “interesting” striker, “If he wants to hurt me, it’s not with a bib. I have a good relationship with him, no problems.

“I think Diego is very privileged because he was the last one to be (put) on the bench.

“Everybody was on the bench. I kept him in the team for all these matches and today we thought the best strategy to play was this one. We are happy with the decision.”

Broadcasters located near the Chelsea bench reported that Costa did not seem to warm up ahead of the game, seeming to wear trainers rather than his customary playing boots which one would expect to see him in assuming he was going to be playing

In response to this matter, Mourinho commented that Costa warmed up when instructed to do so, “A top player going on the bench, they are not happy,” Mourinho added and the manager went on to say, “For me his behaviour was normal. He was ready to play when they went to warm up.”

So while heavy underdog Tyson Fury pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the year when he unanimously outpointed Wladimir Klitschko on Saturday night for the Heavyweight Championship of the World, it is likely there will be only one winner if Costa tries to take on Mourinho and it won’t be the underdog named Diego Costa. Surprises can happen however as Fury proved, so we will see…
