The Interesting Case of Dominic Solanke

The Interesting Case of Dominic Solanke

Chelsea have constantly been criticised by all and sundry for not giving youngsters a chance with the first team. This criticism is justified on the surface. Unfortunately one name that many Chelsea fans including myself believe will have a great future with the club Dominic Solanke may be on the way out of the club this summer or when his contract expires at the end of his contract in 2017.

According to The Guardian, Dominic Solanke is willing to sign a new contract with Chelsea but his wage demands have been an issue for the club. The reports claim the Nigeria and England youth international is demanding as much as £50,000-a week contract package. This if true is outrageous and Chelsea should not consent to such a demand as it is simply outrageous.

Solanke needs to be remainded that he is not yet a first team player, he has not played a single match for the first team and there is simply no basis for him to be making such a ridiculous demand. Alex Iwobi who has been great for Arsenal lately earns just £1,500 per week and is only going to sign an extension that will see him get rewarded with £10,000 a week.

Alex Iwobi has played 14 games for Arsenal, scored three times and created three assists, Solanke has played one game but wants £50,000 a week. Solanke is no doubt a good striker but by giving him £50,000 a week, Chelsea will be sending the wrong signal to other youngsters. He doesn’t even deserve such an amount. Jamie Vardy earns less than £50,000 a week with Leicester City, he has been one of the best players in the Premier league this season.

Patrick Bamford is equally as good as Solanke, should he also be demanding for a £50,000 a week contract? Traore who has been playing for the first team in recent times doesn’t earn as much as that.

Using Arsenal as example again, Hector Bellerin has played over 40 games for Arsenal this season, he has been a key member of the current Arsenal team but earns less than £50,000 a week. Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford earns less than £20,000 a week. N’golo Kante who is hands down the best midfielder in the Premier league this season doesn’t get £50,000 a week. Leicester simply don’t have that type of money to throw around. Kelechi Iheancho at Manchester City has scored more than 10 goals for the first team in all competitions so far this season, he doesn’t get more than £10,000 a week. On what basis is Solanke then demanding £50,000 a week.

I personally see Solanke as one for the future and I believe he will have a great career with us if he keeps his head but if he doesn’t lower his wage demands, Chelsea should let him go. There are so many other players who will readily take the opportunity Solanke has.

If while still a youth team player, he is demanding £50,000 a week, who says he won’t demand £500,000 a week or something more ridiculous when he finally gets his chance with the first team and is doing well.
