Should Chelsea Target Gerard Pique?

The Spanish international, Gerard Pique has been ever-present in the Catalan side since he re-joined the club in May 2008 from Manchester United. However, new Barca boss Luis Enrique has not been impressed by Pique and has left him out of the starting line-up this season.

Enrique has preferred to partner new signing Jeremy Mathieu alongside Javier Mascherano this season. Following an injury to the former, Pique was expected to fill in, but the inexperienced Marc Bartra started alongside Mascherano in Barca’s 2-0 triumph against Ajax in the Champions League last week.

This omission follows his absence from the entire squad for the club’s surprise 1-0 defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo in their recent match. With the 27-year-old no longer first-choice at his boyhood club, Daily Mail is reporting that Pique is moving closer to the exit door amid interest from Premier League clubs.

Chelsea are reportedly vying for the centre-half’s services as Jose Mourinho wants him to replace John Terry. Even Manchester United and City have shown interest in Pique, but the Red Devils are desperate to re-sign the defender in January.
