Mourinho May Sell Torres To Comply With League Rules

Jose Mourinho may be forced to sell under-performing striker Fernando Torres in the current transfer window to comply with the squad rules of the Barclays Premier League which do not allow a club to have more than 17 foreign players above the age of 21, according to the Telegraph.

Chelsea are traveling around Europe in their preseason preparations for the coming season, but there is another regulatory worry for Mourinho and officials at the club. As a result of the return of Didier Drogba and Thibaut Courtois to the squad, and the signing of Spanish pair Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, the squad now has 18 foreign players above the age of 21. This means the club will have to sell one of their foreign players before they can submit their 25-man squad to the Premier League.

Torres has been unable to score so far in Chelsea’s pre-season campaign, and was in the news again for the wrong reasons in the friendly against Olimpija on Sunday. The former Atletico Madrid player was given a good opportunity to score with a pin-point cross, but the striker missed the target from two yards out in his attempt to chest the ball into the net. Comparisons have been drawn to his miss two seasons ago against Manchester United, and Torres could well be the one to be sold before deadline day many pundits feel.
