Could Chelsea Benefit From Signing Griezmann?

Chelsea will be in the market for a new striker after Drogba will say his goodbyes at the end of the season. There has been a lot of speculation regarding how Mourinho will handle this change. Some say that he will go down the same road and sign an experienced striker just as he did with Eto’o and the Ivorian. If that were true, Adebayor could move to Stamford Bridge in June. ZapSportz are suggesting that Chelsea will be going a different path and that the Portuguese boss is planning on spending big to up the ante and challenge Costa and Remy by bringing in a star quality forward. Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann is on many major club’s transfer list after having an incredible La Liga Season. Despite being under contract until 2020, he could be interested to try out the Premier League who for many is the place to go in order to test their potential.

There is a question of compatibility between Griezmann and Chelsea. The first thing to consider is the fact that he is not a number 9 like Eto’o or Drogba. He is much more similar to Messi or Alexis Sanchez. He is a second striker who happens to score goals. He managed to score one goal every two games for Atletico in 50 matches. The second thing to consider is the fact that Chelsea already have the attacking power to support Costa who would be best paired with Griezmann rather than replaced by him. Considering all that, it would be a bit strange to see Abramovich pay £50m for the 24 year old instead of signing Lacazette, Cavani or Higuain who are a lot more suited to Chelsea’s needs.
