Chelsea Youngster On Derby Radar

Chelsea youngster Lewis Baker has been attracting attention from several clubs in England, as a report in the Derby Telegraph has claimed Derby County are monitoring his situation at Stamford Bridge, and are interested in signing the player on loan.

The Blues have an excellent youth structure in place where talents are produced every year. Some of these talents show up at an early age, but fade away as their career progresses. However, there are some rare players who maintain their talent and level of performances throughout their youth stage. Playing in the youth academy of a big club presents a big decision for a young player to make when he grows up and approaches his professional senior career. There is a possibility that the big club may not have a place for the youngster, but moving to another club could mean a step down in the level of football.

Baker has also been featuring for the English national youth squads, with places in the under-17 and the under-19 level. He has made 14 appearances for the latter, and managed to score 9 goals in the process. Baker is also on the radar of Leeds United, a club he faced as a Chelsea player in their FA Cup tie last season. It will be interesting to see whether the 19-year old chooses to stay at Chelsea, or opt to move out on loan for a better chance of regular first team football.
