Chelsea Won’t Spend Big Any More – Mourinho

The Roman Abramovich era at Chelsea is synonymous with spending huge amounts on transfer fees for quality players in their prime. They have spent big money since 2003 on the likes of Hernan Crespo, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Andriy Shevchenko, Fernando Torres, Eden Hazard and many more. From 2003 to 2013, Chelsea have spent an astonishing £2 billion in the ten years.

However, FFP regulations have come into effect and, this summer, Chelsea’s net spend of roughly £10 million is way less than previous transfer windows. The sales of Juan Mata, Kevin De Bruyne, David Luiz and Romelu Lukaku allowed Chelsea to spend big on Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa this summer.

Mourinho has claimed that Chelsea will need to sell players to invest in new ones as FFP will not allow them to splash the cash as they did previously. He also said that the club’s big spending days are over, according to Daily Mail.

He said, “We are making money to be able to spend money. In every transfer window Chelsea is losing players, is selling player. Chelsea in this moment is not a spender – Chelsea in this moment is making more money in transfers than the money we spend. So Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Manchester (United) – all these huge teams, I think they have an advantage.”
