Chelsea To Unveil Plans For Stadium

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is set to reveal his plans to increase Stamford Bridge’s capacity to 60,000.

The Blues will put on an exhibition for local residents on Tuesday where supporters will be able to see exactly what the plans are for the stadium, which is said to be a historic design with large brick pillars, inspired by Westminster Abbey.

Abramovich had thought about relocating to a new stadium altogether, with some of the proposed alternative sites including Earls Court, Battersea Power Station, White City, and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. But none proved feasible. However, he has made the decision to stay at Stamford Bridge and extend the capacity.

Chelsea plan to expand Stamford Bridge from 42,000 to 60,000 – and it is estimated to cost around £500 million even at this early stage, although it is believed it will eventually turn out to be much higher than that figure.

The Chelsea owner and his building team will work within the contours of the current site at Stamford Bridge, with the new four stands even following the angles of the old singular North Stand and the shape of the ground as it was in 1939. From what has been shown on the early blueprints, it will certainly be impressive.

Abramovich is believed to be willing to pump a further £1 billion into Chelsea before handing the reins over to his 21-year-old son.
