Chelsea are about to make one of the smartest transfers ever as Giannelli Imbula might become available for half price. According to Metro, Marseille have serious money problems which means they will have to sell their best as they cannot afford to pay big salaries anymore. The first to go is the French international who has been a constant figure for OM and has been closely followed by many important clubs including Chelsea rivals Arsenal and Liverpool. The 22 year old defensive midfielder who is under contract with the French side until 2018 is valued at £20million but will probably end up being sold for half that.

There is one more element that could influence Imbula’s transfer to Chelsea. OM are not certain yet if they will be playing in the Champions League next year which means they don’t know yet if they will have the budget to sustain the French international’s £1m per year salary. There should not be any problem for Chelsea to top that especially with the 22 year old being one of the most promising and constant players out there. It is to be seen though what changes will be made at Stamford Bridge as well. Obi Mikel has been rumored to leave which means a spot would open up for next season. Even so, Mourinho looks set on giving home-developed players a chance at the first eleven which could turn Imbula’s transfer into a more business oriented trade rather than a way of strengthening the squad. Surely his value will grow if he makes it to Chelsea and reselling him would help the club meet FIFA’s Financial Fair Play demands.
