Chelsea To Go For Another Brazilian Defender?

Chelsea could be set to continue their shopping spree, with Atletico Madrid defender Joao Miranda on their radar, as Metro reports a potential £20 million fee being discussed by both clubs over a move.

The Blues have been really active in this transfer window, having sold and bought several players to upgrade their first team squad. While players like Diego Costa, Didier Drogba, Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis have come into the club, others like Demba Ba, David Luiz, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and most recently Romelu Lukaku have left the club. These departures have left certain gaps and Jose Mourinho cannot afford any excuses this season after having claimed he did not expect his side to win the league last season.

Miranda began his career at Coritiba as a youth player, and developed his game to earn himself a professional contract in 2004. Having just spent one season at the club, he made the move to French outfit Sochaux, where he spent another season with 20 appearances. The 29-year old made the big move back to Brazil joining Sao Paulo in 2006, and played a crucial role by representing the club on 128 occasions, scoring 4 goals. In 2011, he was once again convinced to leave Brazil, and Atletico snapped up the strong defender.

After David Luiz’s departure to Paris St. Germain, Miranda could be the perfect experienced candidate to offer competition and support in the centre of Chelsea’s defense before ultimately taking over from John Terry after next season.
