Chelsea To Complete 4th Transfer Of The Summer?

Just a couple of hours after their 3rd transfer of the season, Chelsea have been linked to another possible move on Brazilian defender Marquinhos. After securing a striker (Michy Batshuayi), a midfielder (N’Golo Kante) and a keeper (Eduardo), the Blues will try to bring in PSG’s highly underrated center-back. While Eduardo was brought in as a fail-safe back-up just in case Courtois and Begovic pick up injuries or need to be rested, Marquinhos is being scouted as a future replacement for Terry. The captain is more than capable of holding his own this season but it is very likely he will lose pace by the end of the season or even this year. There’s also the uncertainty of Zouma’s state after he recovers from the horrific injury he suffered.

Even if Marquinhos is currently with a club that will be playing in the Champions League, with a real chance of winning the trophy, his lack of time on the pitch is something he looks fed up with. Even if the 22-year-old extended his contract in 2015, he is not satisfied with his situation. Silva and Luiz are not to be replaced anytime soon and the fact that their fellow compatriot only gets to play some low-level games may not be enough to keep him in Paris. Sure, he is young but he was quite important while playing for Roma and has put in some impressive performances for PSG.

According to Metro, the transfer value will be at around £40million which is a lot but not as much as Napoli requested for Koulibaly. With some solid negotiations from Chelsea that amount could go down. He was signed by PSG from Roma for half of that so it would be hard for the French side to expect a lot more. It seems that the Marquinhos lead is Chelsea’s last chance at bringing in a quality defender. There are no other players rumored to be keen on moving to Stamford Bridge which is a bit problematic for Conte who does not have too many variations to implement with Cahill and Terry. He could use Ivanovic in the centre as other managers have. PSG’s Brazilian defender has made his international debut at just 19 and played 19 games for his country. Since joining his current club, he was featured in 120 games and scored 6 times which may sound as a lot but it is actually not when you think that Ibrahimovic was featured in 51 games in just last season while still missing 8 matches. There is a small problem with Marquinhos though. Despite being one of the most promising defenders out there and despite looking like an excellent fit for Chelsea, he might have a tough time playing in England. Since joining PSG, he has suffered a number of injuries which may mean he has a tough time with the physicality of the Premier league.
