Chelsea Star Faces Axe From Euro 2016

Chelsea winger Pedro could face being sent home from Spain’s Euro 2016 squad after making complaints about his lack of game time. The forward argued that being at the tournament is a waste of time if he doesn’t get a chance to play.

The Spaniard, who has struggled to fit in at Stamford Bridge, made the controversial comments in an interview on Spanish TV. The result of the interview has left some the Spanish nation outraged, sparking some debate over whether or not the player should be entirely removed from the Spanish squad. One poll published on the popular Spanish football website ‘SPORT’ has seen 85% of fans call for Vicente del Bosque to drop Pedro from the squad.

When asked about his play time, it seemed Pedro had no issue at all with telling it how it is.

“I had other expectations when I arrived here, and it’s not been what I wanted.” said Pedro.

“To assume this role is very difficult for me, and if you don’t see more continuity then you wonder if it is really worth the trouble to keep coming just to be part of the group, to be with my teammates, even though I’m very comfortable.”

“I thought that in the Euros I would have more continuity because I arrived in good shape.”

Pedro has over 50 caps for Spain and was formerly seen as a fundamental part of the squad, however, he has featured for just 9 minutes so far in this year’s European Championship. When asked how he was finding his new role in the national side, he answered very unsurprisingly.

“Badly, obviously. You always want to play and bring your best.” he said.

“Situations sometimes arrive at a point where you have to take a decision.”

Spain are reportedly due to give a press conference that may well clarify Pedro’s future with the team. As of now, there has been no mention of the matter, but Spain coach Del Bosque has spoken on Radio Marca and explained that he had talked to Pedro about his remarks: “It took me by surprise, but it’s better that the lad speaks and explains himself. I’ve spoken to him, he’s apologised to me.”

It remains unclear whether or not Spain will take drastic action and expel Pedro from the team, but it is not unknown for this type of procedure to be taken.

Pedro certainly has a big summer ahead, with question marks looming over his Chelsea career – as well as his national side.
