Chelsea Sign USA International Matt Miazga

Guus Hiddink made an interesting move in signing 20-year-old defender Matt Miazga from New York Red Bulls. It is one of the most unexpected transfers made this winter especially because it comes with a 4 ½ year contract. It also comes with Hiddink’s promise that the youngster for whom Chelsea paid £3.5million, will not be sent out on loan. He will be in the senior squad for the rest of the season and is expected to make at least one or two appearances in the starting eleven. According to the Daily Express, Miazga said: “I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, a world-famous club with a reputation for major success. I am delighted to be in the Premier League, the best league in the world, and can’t wait to meet my team-mates and get going. I am still at the beginning of my career but I believe this is the place to develop and learn from some of the best players in the world.”.

It appears that one of the reasons for which Matt Miazga moved to Chelsea is the fact that he was recommended to the club by none other than Didier Drogba. The Blues’ legend played against the youngster and spoke highly of his potential. Miazga is a USA international and will help give the club some more exposure in the emerging football market of North America which is another small benefit for Chelsea. When you consider all the players sent on loan, Chelsea only have 4 center-backs, so this move does make sense in that regard.

Looking at some of Miazga’s performances, you could say he`s worth the money. He is highly intuitive, good with tackles and versatile. He can play on the flank not only in the center and can cover a large area of the pitch. He seems a smart player with good speed for his size and with good finishing skills when included in set-pieces. Hopefully Miazga will prove to be a good signing.
