Chelsea Have Chance To Save English Aspirations In Europe

Chelsea are seemingly the only club from England to have a realistic chance of winning the UEFA Champions League, after fellow London rivals Arsenal threw away a three-goal lead against Anderlecht at the Emirates Stadium to keep the Belgian side alive in group D, according to the Daily Mail.

The Blues played a tricky away tie against Maribor, and a goal from Agim Ibriami left the club shocked as the home side took the lead in the 50th minute. Jose Mourinho tightened the strings on his side by bringing on Ramires after conceding the goal, and that gave Nemanja Matic license to venture forward on occasions. The defensive midfielder equalised in the 73rd minute for Mourinhos men, and Chelsea were right back in the fray. The West-London based club were presented a golden opportunity to grab the winner in the 86th minute when Eden Hazard was brought down by a Maribor defender to give Chelsea a penalty to win the game. However, Hazard, who has an impressive record with penalties, saw his shot saved by the goalkeeper. The Belgian tried to rescue the situation minutes later, but a point is all Chelsea got from their visit to Maribor.

Mourinhos men still stand first in group G, and look set to qualify as group winners if they can win their next round of matches against Schalke 04 in Germany while Liverpool and Man City have a lot to do to try and qualify for the knockout phase and Arsenal look like they will qualify but only in 2nd place meaning they will face a tough match in the knockout phase.
