Chelsea Give Up On Valdes To Sign 33-Year-Old Free Agent

Not sure if Chelsea will make the best possible choice by signing former AC Milan keeper Marco Amelia instead of Valdes. Of course, financially speaking the Italian is much cheaper than the Spaniard who is very unlikely to accept a cut in pay. There is also a matter of what will happen after Courtois returns. Valdes will clearly not want to continue being the 3rd choice for a position that he once dominated while playing for one of the best teams in the world.

According to Metro, Amelia is separated from Chelsea right now only because he has yet to undergo the medical exam. Other than that there is not much else to sort. If what reporters in Italy are saying is true, then the 33-year-old free agent is going to be joining the Blues for the next year or so. Hopefully Begovic will stay away from injury and Courtois will return 100% fit.

Even if Amelia did play for Milan he does not have a great set of statistics. Valdes would have been much better but it would be next to impossible to convince two great keepers to sit on the bench and play under 10 games each season, even if it would be for Chelsea.

Until December when Courtois is expected to return, Chelsea will apparently count on Begovic and Amelia to keep their goal intact.
