Chelsea Champions League Group Analysed

Chelsea have been drawn a very favourable Champions League group for this years campaign. The English champions were seeded in pot 1, but still faced the prospect of being drawn against some real tricky opponents.

Group G: Chelsea, Porto, Dynamo Kiev, Maccabi Tel-Aviv

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will face a return to former side Porto, who despite losing some of their star players will still provide a challenge for the Blues. Runners-up to Benfica in last season’s Primeira Liga, Porto are the side to beat for Chelsea.

“Chelsea are a great team and they have a coach who knows our club and Portuguese football inside out.” said Porto coach Julen Lopetegui.

Dinamo Kiev, the Ukrainian champions, should be relatively easy for Chelsea to overcome – despite the away fixture having a potential stumbling block. Andriy Yarmolenko is the Ukrainian’s star player, but they do posses talent across the ranks.

As for Chelsea’s final opponents, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Chelsea could well have one of the easiest sides to face in the last 32. Maccabi won the Israeli Premier League last season, but don’t pose too much of a threat to Mourinho’s men.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, who is now a global ambassador for the Blues, had this to say on Chelsea’s group: “This not an easy draw at all.”

“I don’t think going to Tel Aviv and Kiev are easy trips.”
